2016 Ace for Science Tennis Tournament

The third annual Ace for Science tennis tournament was played April 23, 2016, at the Eck Tennis Pavilion at Notre Dame.  The tourney is sponsored jointly by Notre Dame’s College of Science and the South Bend Alumni Association. Proceeds are awarded to teachers in the South Bend Community School Corporation to support STEM programs. Twenty teams participated this year. Winners of the 6-0 Division were Carolyn Shirey and Gabe Labonica. Winners of Division 7-0 were Alan Engel and Dan Bardayan, while Deanna Ponsler and Ram Ramanan won the 8-0 Division. Teachers, who received their grants on May 26, are, clockwise from left, Mary Thorpe, Madison Primary Center; Denise M. Domonkos, Monroe Primary Center; Jeanne Jasper, Darden Primary Center; Sarah Torzewski, Clay High School; Emily Zablocki, Adams High School; David Barnes, Rise Up Academy; Rose Calhoun, Riley High School; Susan Sakimoto, Riley High School; and Dave Van Dyke,  Harrison Primary Center.  Standing in the back are Steve Luecke, executive director of the South Bend Alumni Association, and Margaret Dobrowolska-Furdyna, of Notre Dame’s College of Science.
