Honorees for the 32nd annual South Bend Community Hall of Fame , which took place on November 15, 2018 at Century Center, consisted of South Bend’s finest and most treasured community members. 2019 will be no different. But we wanted to look back upon those individuals who have been so instrumental in the strength and vitality of our city, our nation and our world as we prepare for the new class of honorees being considered for 2019. 2018 South Bend Community Hall of Fame Inductees
- Dave Dunlap, retired teacher and award-winning swim coach at Riley High School. Dave serves on the Board of Trustees of the South Bend Alumni Association and as chair of its Co-Ex Grants Committee. He has been active in other educational endeavors as well.
- Betsy Jochum, original member of the South Bend Blue Sox professional women’s baseball team. She is retired after a long career as a gym teacher at Muessel School.
- Nathan Gunn, South Bend native who is one of the top baritones in the nation. He frequently returns to South Bend to share his talents with the community.
- Abraham Marcus, business owner and philanthropist. He has served as chairman of the board of St. Joseph Health System.
- Bernie Pollack, graduate of Central High School who made his fame as a costumer in Hollywood. The brother of director/actor Sydney Polack, Bernie has remained active in the local Casaday Costume Company.
- Vivian and Arnold Sallie, local power couple who have lent their talents to several local organizations. Vivian, for example, served on the Century Center Board of Managers, while Arnold was a leader of the 100 Black Men.
- Norman Eddy, historical inductee. He was a doctor here in the mid-1800s, then changed careers to practice law. He was elected to the Indiana State Senate, then to the U.S. Congress. He fought and was wounded in the Civil War.
Other honors will be given to Lonnie Douglas, the Ideal Baldoni Distinguished Public Service Award; Crowe Horwath, the Contributions to Education Corporate Award; Forever Learning Institute, Distinguished Community Service Award; and Darryl Boykins, Distinguished Achievement Award.
