Thank you for your support of the 2023 South Bend Community Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Banquet. It was a wonderful evening that we were happy to share with over 600 members of our community!
October 10 was an evening of inspiration: from the stories and achievements of the Inductees and Awardees to their timely remarks about fostering community, sharing resources for the good of all, and supporting our youth, the leaders of tomorrow. We hope that those of you in attendance were energized by this wonderful community event, and left hopeful for the future.
The new Hall of Fame Inductees include: Jack Champaigne, Elizabeth Fletcher-Allen, Dr. Steve Gerber, Jim Kapsa, Ambassador Tim Roemer, Kathy Schneider, and Adeline Wigfall-Jones. The Community Award Winners in 2023 are Rita Glenn, Pat McMahon and Center for Hospice Care.
A special thanks is owed to all those who helped make this event possible: Mary Baker (our amazing Hall of Fame Committee Chair) all of those who serve on Hall of Fame committees, our Board of Trustees and staff, and everyone who volunteered time and resources to pull off this special event. Thank you again for a wonderful evening and congratulations to all of our honorees!
Co-Ex Grant Spotlight
Washington Greenhouse
The Washington greenhouse was dormant for 15+ years, but now it is blooming again. With help from the SBAA to buy equipment and seed starts, students were able to sell 40 plants and donate 40 herb plant starts to Unity Garden. Students who had never planted a seed were running the greenhouse by the end of the semester!
“This grant started our program. Before the grant, we had very few useful materials in our greenhouse and the greenhouse itself had not been used in 15+ years. Once people saw plants growing in the greenhouse, they became interested. We had many staff and students take plants home and create a garden or planters for the first time. Plus, the students that actually grew the plants learned so much.“
