June 2023 Newsletter

Since 1987, the South Bend Alumni Association has been proud to honor upstanding members of our community in the South Bend Community Hall of Fame. Each year, we choose a small cohort of exceptional individuals who have striven for excellence and contributed to our community in public service, arts, athletics, business, education, science and technology. This year, we are excited to induct seven distinguished community members on October 10, 2023. Additionally, we celebrate individuals and organizations for their contributions through our Community Awards.

Our Honorees give the young people of our community an example of excellence to strive for. Their achievements do not belong to them alone, but are the result of a community of family, friends, teachers, coaches and community cheering them on.

It is the South Bend Alumni Association’s mission to be that cheering squad for the youth of today as they explore their interest in art and music, in track and football and tennis, in robotics and coding, debate and advocacy. When young people are supported and given the opportunities to pursue their interests, they are given hope, a voice, a new direction.

The SBAA directly supports dream-building through the Co-Ex Grant Program, which funds the co-curricular and extra-curricular activities for students in the SBCSC. We hope to give all of the kids in South Bend schools the chance to achieve things they never thought possible and be inspired to become future Hall of Famers.

CO-EX GRANT SPOTLIGHT

Clay High School Girls Volleyball

In February, the Clay Volleyball Team was able to use Co-Ex funds to buy new volleyball uniforms.

For the service outreach, members of the team headed over to Clay International Academy this spring to read with 4th and 5th grade students. It’s great to see SBSCS students helping one another!

“The Co-Ex Grant made it possible for our team to buy much needed jerseys for our program.

The impact, especially now being our last season, allows our team to play with pride.

Our last season will be memorable! Thank You!”

Warren Bynum, Clay Volleyball Coach

Stay up-to-date on your high school classmates and reunion activities by creating an account on your school’s site. Its FREE!

“The South Bend Alumni Association high school websites will be eight years old in July 2023. The seven public schools have over 101,800 classmate names and senior photos posted, with more being added each day.

The goal is to provide means for all classmates to connect individually with private or public postings as well as collectively by announcing reunions and related activities including posting upcoming classmate birthdays as well as obituaries.

An important aspect of classmate profiles is the recording of high school memories and later life in college, travels, military service, employment, marriage and children etc. These stories are very important to your fellow classmates, your family and future generations. Give some thought to review your story and update it. Your grandchildren will be very happy to read them.

You can leave comments in the “In Memory” section for a classmate, however, they will not be reading it. You may want to send the message now while you are both “above ground”. It’s like sending a smile electronically. They may be waiting for a hug or your good news.

We depend on yearbooks donated to scan and store in our reference libraries. All South Bend Schools for all years. Also, hundreds of our school newspapers have been scanned and searchable. Please donate any that you may find.”
